Experiential Learning
91导航 Marion offers our majors the chance to take their history classroom knowledge and apply it through a range of local internship opportunities. Students have interned at the Marion County Historical Society, the Delaware County Historical Society and the Marion Women's Club, earning course credit while exploring how their history major could lead to careers in archival and library management, museum work, or historical education.
Examples of recent student internship projects:
- Discovering the 19th century letters of a German-American family from Marion, OH
- Cataloguing a collection of designer clothes from the 1950s and 1960s.
- Transcribing the diary of a young WW1 veteran from Delaware, OH
- Tracing the history of Black families employed by Ohio Wesleyan Univ. in the Civil War era
We require our history majors to take at least two upper-level history seminars in which they work on semester-long research projects. We also encourage students to continue this practice of independent research by offering one semester 鈥渋ndependent study鈥 courses or a multi-semester undergraduate thesis, supervised by our faculty. To support this independent research, our majors may apply for OSU-Marion Travel Research grants.
We also encourage our students to present their work at scholarly conferences and public events. Studying the lives of enslaved people in early Kentucky for her thesis, a recent history major received funding to travel to a number of Kentucky libraries for a week and read through multiple collections of plantation records.
